Frequently Asked Questions About Gambling Harm Support

Counselling for Gambling Harm FAQs

1. What is gambling harm counselling?

Gambling harm counselling is a safe, confidential space where you can explore your relationship with gambling, understand what’s driving it, and begin rebuilding your life. At Sunrise Recovery, sessions are trauma‑informed and grounded in lived experience, so you’re never judged or rushed. If you want to learn more about how I work, visit my Counselling page.

2. How does lived‑experience counselling help?

Because I’ve personally recovered from gambling addiction, I understand the shame, fear, secrecy, and emotional overwhelm that often come with it. Lived experience means you don’t have to explain the unexplainable — I already speak the language. This helps clients feel understood, reduces shame, and builds trust quickly. You can read more about this in my blog post on lived experience.

3. Do I need to be 'ready' to stop gambling before starting counselling?

No. Many people come to counselling feeling unsure, scared, or stuck in cycles they can’t break. You don’t need to have everything figured out. We work together at your pace, starting wherever you are right now.

4. What happens in a counselling session?

Sessions are calm, supportive, and led by your needs. We might explore:

What gambling gives you emotionally

Triggers and patterns

Shame, secrecy, or guilt

Trauma or stress underneath the behaviour

Practical steps to regain control, every session is collaborative — you’re never told what to do.

5. Is counselling confidential?

Yes, everything you share is confidential. The only exceptions are standard safeguarding situations where someone is at risk of harm.

6. How many sessions will I need?

Everyone’s journey is different. Some people feel a shift after a few sessions; others prefer longer‑term support. We review your progress regularly so you always feel in control of your therapy.

7. Do you work with partners or family members affected by gambling?

Yes. Gambling harm impacts more than the person who gambles. I offer support for partners, family members, and loved ones who are dealing with the emotional, financial, or relational fallout. Learn more on my About page.

8. Can I work with you if I’m still gambling?

Absolutely. Many clients begin counselling while still gambling. There is no judgement and no pressure. We focus on understanding what’s happening and building safety, stability, and confidence.

9. What if I feel ashamed or embarrassed?

Shame is incredibly common — and it’s one of the biggest barriers to reaching out. Because I’ve lived through gambling harm myself, you will never be judged. My role is to help you feel safe, understood, and supported.

10. How do I book a session?

You can contact me directly through the Contact page. I’ll reply personally and warmly, and we can arrange a time that works for you.

11. Do you offer online counselling?

Yes. Many clients prefer online sessions because they feel safer, flexible and more private.

12. What if I’m worried about money because of gambling?

I understand how financial pressure affects recovery. We can talk openly about affordability, and I’ll work with you to find a safe, manageable plan. There is no judgement — only support.

13. Is Sunrise Recovery right for me?
